MLD can increase lymphatic flow by up to 25% (Tan et all, 2011)
Manual Lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a type of massage that uses very light pressure to help stimulate your lymphatic system to move fluid. It is non-invasive, doesn't require any oils or creams, and can increase the movement of lymphatic flow by up to 25%.
MLD is sequential, rhythmic and individualised to your swelling pattern. It initially works to help increase return fluid from your lymph nodes to the bloodstream (this occurs at the front of the neck next to the clavicle).
Once this space is created, fluid from the extremities more easily flow into these nodes. This process is assisted by applying gentle pressure to the skin, which stimulates the lymphatic capillaries to increase their collection and movement rate.
MLD is best provided by an accredited practitioner, and complemented by a home based self MLD such as dry brushing.
